DUAL REWARD FOR SHERIFF'S OFFICE SUMMER CEREAL DRIVE PARTICIPATION: Jefferson County, Arkansas - June 19, 2014-The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office took part in this year’s 14th Annual Summer Cereal Drive geared at collecting boxes of cereal and other qualifying cereal products all to provide healthy breakfast options for children and families in Arkansas who otherwise go without the most important meal of the day.
The Summer Cereal Drive provides hungry Arkansans with non-perishable breakfast items that are both nutritious and kid-friendly. Through agency purchases and donations from Wal-Mart, citizens as well as other Jefferson County departmental personnel, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office turned in 900 boxes of cereal to the Arkansas Food Bank on Thursday, June 19, 2014.
In 2013, the Summer Cereal Drive posted a record, 178,570 boxes of cereal. In addition to participating in such a great cause, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office were also able to use the cereal donated to satisfy a $7,500.00 invoice with the Arkansas Law Enforcement Support Office (LESO) for the recent procurement of a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle unveiled to the public during a joint agency press conference at the State Capitol on May 21, 2014. For every 4 boxes of cereal donated to the Arkansas Food Bank, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office MRAP acquisition fee was reduced by $50.00
The armored vehicles, now demilitarized, are part of the Department of Defense 1033 Program, which has been dedicated to providing law enforcement agencies with quality excess government property for domestic use. The MRAP will be used by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team (SRT) to repurpose as a ballistic capable rescue/tactical vehicle to be utilized to enhance officer and citizen safety when responding to active shooter type incidents.
